Healthy Schools Grants

Our Healthy Schools grant program seeks to support schools by providing them with seed funds to implement and sustain a healthier schools environment. The Healthy Schools Program was launched in 2005 by the American Heart Association and the William J. Clinton Foundation with funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

The Mat-Su Health Foundation, in support of the Valley’s schools, strongly endorses the Healthy Schools goal to reduce the nationwide prevalence of childhood obesity. We provide funding to schools to support the implementation of the Healthy Schools Program in Mat-Su Borough schools. The amount of finding varies depending on school size.

Requirements for Healthy Schools Grant applicants:

  • Please note that there are changes to the program this year as compared to previous years.
  • Applicants must be a K-12 school, public or private, physically located in the Mat-Su Borough (with the exception of Alaska Middle College, which is eligible for funding).
  • As part of the 2015 Healthy Schools Grant application, schools are required to:
    • Convene a school wellness council.
    • Use the Healthy Schools Program School Health Index to assess the school’s current efforts.
    • Develop an action plan based on what’s important and achievable in the school community.
    • Identify resources that can facilitate implementation of the action plan.
    • Draft a budget.
