Factors that affect health are often referred to as “social determinants of health.” The American Public Health Association defines a “healthy community” as one that meet everyone’s basic needs such as having a living wage that supports safe, affordable and accessible food, water, housing, education, health care and places to play, as well as being connected to family, friends and the community for support.

The vision of the Factors That Affect Health area of focus is that all Mat-Su residents have:

  • Transportation to work, healthcare, school/community activities and other opportunities to improve their lives
  • Support and connection to family, friends, neighbors, and the broader community
  • A level of income that supports a healthy lifestyle and provides for safe housing
  • Education that provides full access to information needed to promote health, wellness, and quality of life
