Q: Is the FAFSA required for Mat-Su Health Foundation Scholarships?

A: Completion of the FAFSA is required for all Academic Scholarship applicants. It is not required for Vocational Scholarship applicants.

Q: What kinds of programs qualify for scholarships?

A: We give Academic Scholarships to students pursuing a health or wellness-related degree or a degree in nonprofit management at accredited colleges and universities both in Alaska and Outside. Some of the majors pursued by previous scholarship recipients include nursing, psychiatry, and pre-med. However, this this is not an exhaustive list; we will consider any major that will allow the student to contribute to our goal of making Mat-Su the healthiest borough in the US. The Vocational Scholarship program is available to help pay for training in areas such as medical office professions, addictions counseling, certified nurse assistant (CNA), phlebotomy, and other certificate programs that do not result in a college degree, but still fill a vital need in the health care community.

Q: What is the maximum amount of a Mat-Su Health Foundation scholarship?

A: The maximum for traditional Academic Scholarships is $20,000; for Mat-Su Scholars Awards it is $10,000; and for Vocational Scholarships it is $5,000.

Q: What’s the difference between Academic Scholarships and the New Mat-Su Scholars program?

A: Traditional academic Scholarships are need-based, while Mat-Su Scholars Scholarships are not need-based. Both include the applicant's health care goal as a criteria, and both require the completion of the FAFSA. The Mat-Su Scholars process includes an essay question and potentially an interview, where the traditional scholarship does not. The same application is submitted for both programs.

Q: How much money is each of your scholarships worth?

A: The amount of each award varies. In 2017, the maximum award was $20,000.

Q: When will I find out if I am selected to receive a scholarship?

A: Recipients of Academic Scholarships are notified about 8 weeks after the application period closes. The response time for Vocational Scholarships is typically around 30-45 days.

Q: What happens if I qualify for both a traditional Academic Scholarship and a Mat-Su Scholars award? Will I get both??

A: If an applicant qualifies for both, they will receive the higher of the two awards.

Q: Can I start an application, save it, and then return to it later?

A: Yes!  You can return to a saved application by clicking here.

Q: I have a question and I can’t find the answer on your website. Who should I contact?

A: For additional assistance, you may contact an MSHF staff member:
