Fred Becker Receives 2026 Bert Hall Award for Strengthening Mat-Su Food Security Systems
Mat-Su Health Foundation (MSHF) is proud to announce Fred Becker, Executive Director of the MatSu Food Bank, as the recipient of the 2026 Bert Hall Award. For thirteen years, the Bert Hall Award has recognized individuals or groups who demonstrate dedication to improving health and wellness in the Mat-Su Borough by creating systems-level change. Through his work leading the MatSu Food Bank, Fred has played an invaluable role in increasing food access, connecting with community through partnerships, and establishing sustainable change in our local food system.

“Fred is skilled at bridging community gaps and fostering authentic, lasting relationships with people across sectors,” said Esther Pitts, President and CEO of MSHF. “He lifts others up, often highlighting the contributions of the many meaningful partners it takes to inspire positive change. Under his leadership, compassion, respect, and dignity have become essential pillars of the MatSu Food Bank’s work.”
In just two years as executive director, Becker has transformed the MatSu Food Bank into a hub of innovation and partnership. He has strengthened ties with the Food Bank of Alaska and cultivated a thriving network of more than 30 nonprofit partners. The results are remarkable: food distribution has more than doubled, from 130,000 pounds in 2024 to 312,000 pounds in 2025, delivering critical support to families across the Valley during a time of rising need.
Becker has also become a cornerstone of the Mat-Su Food Coalition, where he actively shares knowledge, champions collaboration, and helps elevate the entire anti-hunger sector. His work ensures that smaller pantries can operate more efficiently by accessing and distributing food at a scale they could not achieve on their own. This spirit of collective impact has led to a more coordinated, effective response to food insecurity across the region.
The Bert Hall Award was established in 2013 to honor the legacy of Bert Hall, a lifelong advocate for improving health and quality of life for Alaskans. Hall, who passed away on November 4, 2025, was known for his tireless commitment to civic service, veterans, and the well-being of Mat-Su residents. His legacy lives on through this award, which celebrates those working to improve systems that impact community health, including food security, healthcare, education, and transportation.
Becker was presented the award at the Foundation’s annual membership meeting on June 8, 2026. In his acceptance speech, he honored the MatSu Food Bank team and board of directors, sharing that dignity and respect continue to guide their work in the Mat-Su. The MatSu Food Bank works to eliminate hunger and build lasting food security by providing reliable, barrier-free access to nutritious food and essential resources.
