Strategies – Workforce Development

1. Workforce Recruitment and Retention

The State of Alaska’s SHARP (Supporting Health Access (Through Loan) Repayment Program was created to help graduating health professionals pay off part of their student loan. This is also a tool used by health care employers to recruit, retain, and train health care workers in Alaska. The Mat-Su Health Foundation provides funding for this program for eight behavioral health positions in the Mat-Su: two counselors, three social workers, and three nurse practitioners.

2. Supporting Workforce Growth

The Mat-Su Health Foundation offers two distinct scholarship opportunities:

-Academic Scholarships for students pursuing college degrees with health or wellness majors, or nonprofit management.
-Vocational Scholarships to assist students with the cost of training and certification for jobs in health and wellness fields.

3. Leadership and Professional Development

The Mat-Su Health Foundation supports non-profit leadership development programs for executive directors, supervisors, managers, board members, and program leaders in order to increases the sustainability and capacity of organizations serving Mat-Su Borough residents.

4. Workforce Development Partnerships

The Mat-Su Health Foundation is currently developing post-Secondary partnerships to reinforce existing partnerships and innovative collaborations.
